A herbarium is an institution with deposited collections of dried specimens of plants, ferns, lichens, fungi, algae, and fossils. Type specimens are references of new plant species, and are categorized. The most common are: a holotype which was designated by the author when the species was first named, an isotype which is a duplicate of the holotype, a syntype is one or more specimens designated by author when holotype was not cited, and a topotype which is a specimen later collected in an area where the first specimen of the species was collected and defined. Because many new species were discovered in Floyd County by Alvan W. Chapman and others, Floyd County will be always a source for the collection of the topotype specimens for those species.
When professional taxonomists with authority conclude that a type specimen (with some morphological differences) has an identity equal to a previously published type specimen they called it a "taxonomic synonym".
